The garage is the main feature visitors see when driving up to this lake-front property in Montclair, Va. The main residence is situated behind and down the slope from the garage.
The homeowners wanted some “wow” factor to greet visitors, and since the original structure was in need of repair, they decided instead of simple removal and replacement of siding and roofing, a redesign was in order. They wanted to incorporate Craftsman-style details and a flowing roof line that would emulate the waves of the lake.
One of the main challenges surfaced in the planning stage of the project. The original design called for a loft to be constructed within the new roof structure above the garage. Unfortunately, zoning regulations pertaining to detached structures and nonconforming use made it impossible to include the loft in the project.
The other challenge was purely practical: Constructing the curved roof of the eyebrow, which was created with prefabricated trusses and a large amount of hand cutting of curved blocking. The roof trusses in the curved area were each designed with a different bottom cord-to-peak dimension. The wall on which the trusses were bearing was also curved so that each truss bearing point was different from the adjacent truss.
In addition, the trusses had two roof pitches incorporated into the design. The detailed truss design, once installed, created a flowing arched roof structure.
