The existing structure, a typical 1980s speculative home with negligible character, was situated on a large parcel of land in an area with several noteworthy historic homes. It had an impressive approach via a long, tree-shaded drive, but the grandeur ended abruptly at the front door.
The solution was to add a covered entry for guests and create a sense of stateliness more in tune with the home’s environs.
The full-width, two-story porch is patterned after other historic homes in the area. It gives the home an appropriate visual mass and a grand presence. Guests now have a very real sense of arrival.
An additional benefit is the new second level balcony that gives the homeowners a new outdoor living space with views of the neighboring countryside.
Judges called it a spectacular improvement, a strong and historically correct porch that ties the home more closely to its surroundings.
