Seeking to better capture the dramatic views of the Olympic Peninsula and the Strait of Juan de Fuca, a newly retired couple moving back to the U.S. from Asia, purchased an existing home with clear ideas to improve and remodel it.
Despite its beautiful location, the home did not take full advantage of its surroundings. It was dark and full of small rooms. Many of the rooms had small windows that did not allow for much natural light, nor did they allow for sweeping views of the water.
Focusing on the kitchen area, Seattle Design Build opened up the space by adding an adjoining two-story sunroom/conservatory to the renovated kitchen. This solution captured the sought after views, added a dining area in close proximity to the kitchen and brought lots of additional natural light into the home.
Constructed of clear vertical grain Douglas fir and commercial grade glass panels, the 12-ft. tall custom sunroom was situated to capture the best views and grab the often limited Northwest sunlight. To keep out UV rays, eliminate leaks, even in the blustery Pacific Northwest, the sunroom was built with a proprietary glazing system.
Additional space below the new sunroom was also put to use as a storage place for recreational gear, firewood and an exercise room.
