GOLD AWARD
Tenhulzen Remodeling, Inc., Redmond, Wash.
Project cost: $96,000
This secluded 1980s wooded lodge, built with materials milled from the property, had significant charm but lacked the “grand lodge” experience the new owners desired.
The primary goal for Tenhulzen Remodeling, Inc., Redmond, Wash., was to enhance the exterior entry by providing a covered, drive-through structure over the sweeping circular driveway, while enhancing the character of the existing home. The finished project needed to be wheelchair accessible, allow delivery trucks to pass and appear original to the home.
Among the challenges for this project were limited crane access, concealed lighting, structural connections, lateral shear and the roof attachment to the existing home would have to be carefully calculated for pitch, width and height.
To solve these problems, 3-D modeling software was used to illustrate what became a double-gabled roof design set on four columns with river rock base. Each of the columns are formed in tapered, solid concrete castings affixed to the cross beams with large L-shaped structural steel plates and 1 1/2-in. bolts on a staggered pattern.
