A remodeling company purchased an existing galvanized steel building that formerly housed an auto repair shop to create a new corporate office and warehouse.

The goals were numerous. Functionally, they needed to create office space for six full-time and one part-time employee, a conference room, a room for training field staff, and a warehouse for equipment and material storage. Beyond function, the company also hoped to showcase the company’s design sense, capability, and craftsmanship.

Additional structural supports (footings and steel reinforcements) were needed for all the new loads. A new canopy required beams cantilevered from new columns. And, the two-story office space needed to fit within the existing roof bearing height of 15 ft.

To demonstrate their abilities as a construction company, they chose to use color to emphasize all of the major structural elements. Perhaps most dramatically, the company used a mahogany exterior siding around the office portion of the building to convey warmth and a comforting color in contrast to the steel.

Turning a former portrait studio into an upscale piano and wine bar and making the long, narrow space into a functional, cozy space that didn’t appear crowded, was the challenge.

As with any old building, structural concerns had to be dealt with first. Years of do-it-yourself room additions and inefficient mechanical systems made gutting the interior the best course.

However, the existing sign and its landmark name were preserved.

The layout showcases the piano in the front window, while a bar occupies one wall and tall tables for four line the opposite wall. The bar itself is made of Persian brown granite with a triple ogee edge and ornate carved wood accents in natural cherry finish.

Beveled glass mirrors and a fireplace create a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Commissioned oil paintings adorn softly lit walls. The judges called the project an excellent transformation that delivers a major “wow” factor.
