There are a good many homes from the 1980s, that are solid in every respect, but they just need an updated look to match, some internal renovations.

Such is the case with a 1980s vintage contemporary home located in northern Virginia, just outside Washington, D.C. The owner, a realtor, approached Kohler Associates, of Burke, Va. about a complete remodel of their existing structure, adding about 700 sq. ft. in the process.

Kohler entered this project into our Master Design Awards, not as a whole-house remodel, but rather simply on its merits as an exterior face-lift. Our judges found that it had plenty of merit.

Kohler took the more modern looking A-frame-like double peaks within the existing home and add some major massing changes to transform it into a classic two-story home with three traditional gables facing the front of the home.

“The main challenge,” says the Kohler application statement, “was to remove any memory of the 1980s contemporary exterior and reinterpret the language of the architecture in a craftsman cottage style.”
