Remodeler: Benson Builders, Inc., Virginia Beach, Va.
Project Location: Norfolk, Va.
Project Cost: $385,000
The homeowner retained the services of Benson Builders, Inc., to create a tropical paradise in the backyard of her home in the Ghent neighborhood of Norfolk.
The central element of the project was an existing two-car garage that was transformed into an entertainment cabana. The 100-year-old structure, which featured a slate roof, was carefully renovated. A standard 8-foot ceiling was altered to accommodate a 10-foot tray ceiling. The challenge during this work was to support the roof structure while reframing the ceiling.
A 10-foot section of wall was opened up to allow for a view of the pool and fountain. Two arched openings and an entrance were created on the courtyard side, along with a pergola of solid white oak supported by two columns.
A custom-designed water fountain with hand-carved Italian limestone accents the pool. To allow foliage growth and privacy, another white-oak pergola frames the water fountain. Separating the driveway and courtyard, a brick wall with bluestone cap, aged lights and a double white-oak gate with iron rosettes completes the courtyard design.
An artist was hired to complement the cabana with faux finishes and tropical scenes.
Planting beds throughout the backyard bring in a tropical ambiance of palms, vines and other foliage.
