Sherwin-Williams: Colormix Forecast 2019

Sherwin-Williams launches its 10th annual Colormix Color Forecast, which identifies colors from free-spirited wanderers and old-world storytellers while drawing inspiration from all over the globe. Developed by Sue Wadden, director of color marketing at Sherwin-Williams, and the Color Forecast team, the 42-color palette can be divided into six themes, also known as color journals, that together combined result in an organic, spontaneous palette. The six color journals are: Shapeshifter, Wanderer, Aficionado, Enthusiast, Naturalist and Raconteur.

“Every color in the Color Forecast, whether alone or when combined with others, tells a different story, a different riddle or a different song similar to the honesty found only in a written journal,” Wadden says. “Our intent was to ask ourselves, ‘If this palette were a person, what kind of person might they be?’ making it important to bring forth a forecast that is personal and aspiring yet attainable—how all design should be.”

  • Shapeshifter: The color palette’s aesthetic draws inspiration from mystical nature of the deep sea to the galaxy and everything in between, and is rooted in strong geometrics and clean lines. Its atmospheric wisps of color are grounded by deep, mysterious blues.
  • Wanderer: This theme is for those who need to soak in the endless horizons and subtle earthy tones of the high plains, and is sun-washed and warm. Clays, caramels and browns are one part cowboy and one part Scandinavian style.
  • Aficionado: Boasting tailored tones that are tasteful, elegant and classic, the palette, like a bookcase of leather-bound classics, evokes nostalgia and timeless tradition. Copper and gold anchor tones of merlot and gray for a balance of charm that is tasteful without being ostentatious.
  • Enthusiast: A fresh take on “maximalism”, this theme is free-spirited with maximum attitude yet with harmonious results. Its bold pops of vivid blue, green and red provide an opportunity to push boundaries with color.
  • Naturalist: Offering a connection to the wonder of the world in full bloom, the palette introduces lush, sophisticated tones from conservancies to hothouses that never fade. Ranging from mushroom to passionate pink, the focus on botanicals is slightly classic with bold details.
  • Raconteur: Representing today’s desire and appreciation of stories and storytellers, the color journal translates human origin from Africa to the New World into a rich palette. A subtle reminder of connection, it incorporates rich red to muted mauve.

PPG: 2019 Color of the Year

According to color experts at PPG, the most impactful color trends for 2019 will be closely tied to nature, and the paint brand’s 2019 Color of the Year, Night Watch (PPG1145-7), leads the way. The luxurious, classic shade of green allows homeowners to emulate the feeling of lush greenery and the healing power of nature in their spaces.

The urge to reconnect with nature in today’s tumultuous society was a recurring theme during the PPG Global Color Workshop in early February. Bringing together over 20 PPG global color stylists from the automotive, consumer electronics, aerospace and home paint industries, the attending stylists analyze the runway, lifestyles, demographics, geographies, and global and cross-cultural societal inspirations to determine what colors will resonate and represent the PPG global color forecast. While Night Watch is recognized as the PPG 2019 Color of the Year, it is one of the 200 colors in the PPG 2019 Global Color Trends Forecast, which are broken down into four color stories in 2019.

  • With It: This color collection reflects the youthful spirit, creative, energetic, optimistic drive and diversity found in the collective spirit of today’s young adults. The palette incorporates lively hues, like Cherry Brandy, a cheery red; Crushed, a bold yellow; and Mystic Blue, a playful blue.
  • With Class: Centered on old-school elegance, this palette features a rainbow of saturated darks that convey a worldly tone while simultaneously expressing a contemporary aesthetic. The color collection includes Deep Emerald, Chilled Wine, Hot Stone and Cinnamon Diamonds.
  • With Out: Representing an interest in minimalism and connectedness to the outdoors, this theme fits consumers craving for the things that make them feel healthy, grounded and calm. The palette features an abundance of greens, like Pine Forest and Antique Slate, as well as organic colors like Cocoa Delight and Cool Concrete.
  • With Spirit: The color collection addresses those seeking to infuse an environment with zen-living and mindfulness for more spirituality. Intense hues like Imperial Purple evoke spiritual overtones and pair well with colors like Wild Lilac as softer, romantic accents.
