Despite the signs of age and degradation, an inspired designer recognized the classic character of the little home. Its exterior needed minor and routine updates, although the brick repair proved to be a challenge because vents had to be removed. The original construction did not have framing on the exterior walls, moreover, which made fitting and securing the replacement bricks difficult.
Eliminating unnecessary hallways and doors opened up more space for the living area, bedrooms and bathroom. Floor-to-ceiling dark walnut in the front entry creates a warm, bold welcome, and the rich blue-gray color seen throughout the house shows that even a dark color can make a small space feel larger. The limestone fireplace surround has a brass inset that ties into the living room.

There was a night-and-day change between the original house and the final product over the course of this project. What was a worn and ramshackle house is now a warm, inviting, and comfortable family home the clients are proud of. Using creative yet inexpensive elements, the project team took a simple home and made it something exceptional.
Removing interior walls, salvaging structural beams, and adding new doors and windows opened the space and filled it with natural light. Fanciful wallpaper, unique lighting fixtures, and accent walls with pops of color add interest and touches of whimsy to a simple, understated elegance that exudes from first glance.
