Marrokal Design & Remodeling

Location: Carlsbad, California
Square footage before: 200 (covered patio)
Square footage after: 417 (+3,000 yard/pool)

The homeowners wanted to transform their backyard into their own personal getaway. By adding a lap pool, a fire pit, an outdoor living area and barbecue, it became the epitome for summer pool parties with their neighbors.

The company wanted to keep the integrity of their Spanish-style home, so it added blue tiles in the pool, which created the perfect amount of contrast with the clay roof tiles and white stucco.

The clients love their location in the foothills west of Fort Collins and wanted a larger outdoor living space to better entertain guests, enjoy views of the valley and keep their dogs safe from dangerous rattlesnakes.

A multideck design encourages outdoor dining, soaking in the hot tub and gathering around the gas fire pit on chilly nights. Sturdy, corrugated metal skirting—buried below grade around the fence and deck perimeter—keeps wildlife away from pets, people and the foundation.

CG&S Design-Build

Location: Austin, Texas
Designer: Sara Hadden
Square footage: 1,068 (ADU)

What was once a steep fall off into the wooded creek below is now a platform for relaxation. The company improved the outdoor living area dramatically by building out an infinity pool and pool deck along with a dedicated grill zone that ties in with the home. Improvements were made to the exterior façade as well as the terraced landscaping.

Across the deck, a new accessory dwelling unit (ADU) is built in a style similar to the home with features including a vaulted ceiling that rises above the new pool cabana area. The new versatile guesthouse plays various roles, from providing flexible cabana space off the pool to serving as a guesthouse or homework studio and creating an opportunity for
an additional garage.

Judd Builders

Location: Asheville, North Carolina
Square footage: 1,800

The owners sought an outdoor living space that could be an extension of their remodeled kitchen, where everybody tends to gather. A bifold door creates a seamless transition from the indoors to the outdoors. The outdoor grilling area and smoke/game kitchen were requirements because the client is an avid hunter and outdoorsman.

The screened porch has cedar tongue-and-groove ceilings, a wood-burning masonry fireplace made of Tennessee fieldstone, composite decking and retractable screens. An outdoor kitchen area includes a Big Green Egg, gas grill and a storage area, and the lower level has a smoke kitchen with a commercial hood, fryer, sink, reclaimed barn-wood slider doors and a smoker.

Location: Dallas, Texas
Square footage: 1,000+ (addition)

With hot summers and mostly mild winters, the area lends itself well to outdoor living; but prior to the remodel, the backyard consisted primarily of just a large, grassy field and severely lacked in outdoor living options. The homeowners wanted to create an outdoor retreat that offered their family and prospective guests numerous entertainment options that could be enjoyed year-round.

The parents, former Olympic swimmers, have four boys who are following in their competitive swimming footsteps. The remodel included a covered cabana, fire-pit gathering area, concrete-pad sports court, three pools (an upper level spa pool and general use pool, and a lower level lap pool connected via infinity-edge waterfall to the upper level pools), as well as new fencing and landscaping.

Mom’s Design Build

Location: Eden Prairie, Minnesota
Designer: Heather Sweeney

The owners bought their large home in a new development largely because it looked out over a pastoral preserve that can never be developed. But the foreground was nothing but an elevated screen porch on spindly posts and an expansive, flat lawn. They wanted an outdoor space that could accommodate 20 to 30 people and extend their lower-level entertainment area outdoors.

The space needed to reflect their favorite travel destination, Tuscany, and fit the home’s modern farmhouse architecture. They credit the company with nailing the design and working into winter to have it ready for spring.

Texas Custom Patios

Location: Highland Village, Texas
Square footage before: 300
Square footage after: 1,025

With many children and grandchildren living in the area, the clients wanted their backyard to be a place where the entire extended family could hang out. They had the existing pool and outdoor kitchen but no shaded area or anywhere to relax and enjoy the company. The home and pool had plenty of stone and rounded features that helped create a space that mirrors the existing structure.

The homeowners desired a rustic and elegant feel in four different areas: a covered balcony with a fireplace, which is an extension of the upstairs kitchen and game room and now functions as an outdoor living room; a new dining area below the balcony; a pergola above the existing patio and outdoor kitchen; and a large fire pit with built-in seating for 16 guests that looks beyond the yard.

Living beside a golf course has advantages, including long, green sightlines from the back of the house. The “two-room” porch gives the homeowners more than just a comfortable space to look out. They grill out, they entertain, and on cool days, they warm themselves by the contemporary fireplace.

The porch was designed to be a destination for entertaining and weekend family dinners. It has become the preferred work-from-home space for many months of the year. With an indoor grill (and required ventilation) the family cooks and dines on the porch frequently. Outdoor living can add another dimension, and this porch creates a comfortable, peaceful connection to the outdoors.
