2021 Chrysalis Awards for Remodeling Excellence

by Kyle Clapham

On July 6, the Chrysalis Awards program recognized some of the nation’s best remodeling and design work in 14 categories of residential and commercial remodeling. Chrysalis began in 1994 and is open to all remodeling and design professionals in the U.S.

This year, 70 companies received awards. The winning projects were determined based on overall design, creative use of space and materials, and the degree to which the project enhanced the original structure or space.

Photos of all 2021 award-winning projects can be seen at chrysalisawards.com along with all other winning projects since 2000.

Functionally, this couple wanted a lot of storage. The project included recessed medicine cabinets and scads of cabinetry on the his-and-hers vanity. In addition to the vanity cabinets, a countertop cabinet was added to make sure they always have enough space. Drawers were created beneath cabinets, and some of the cabinets contained specialty pull-outs, including a trash pull-out and a handy scale pull-out at the bottom of one of the cabinets.

With four daughters about to enter their teenage years, there was a need for more space in this elegant timber-frame home built in 1797. Most additions change a building’s footprint, but the company added 1,100 square feet by going up and creating a third floor with a fifth bedroom, office and two bathrooms—all without disrupting any of this antique home’s lower levels. The new, airy space blends seamlessly into the existing home’s flow and matches its elegance as well.

This traditional kitchen was newly built to accommodate the needs of a young, growing family. The large windows created some challenges with regard to upper cabinets. The designer chose to solve this issue with a unique glass-fronted, built-in cabinet in a different gray color with Cremone bolts to highlight the homeowner’s collection of decorative plates and serving pieces.

Decade of Excellence Award

Carnemark design + build of Bethesda, Md.

Davitt Design Build of West Kingston, R.I.

Hubert Whitlock Builders of Charlotte, N.C.

The Decade of Excellence is the highest award that Chrysalis can present because it represents not only excellence in construction and design, but excellence that has been tested over time. It is only presented once to residential remodeling and design companies who have won a Chrysalis Award in 10 separate years since Chrysalis became a national competition in 2000.

This year, we are honoring three more companies who have demonstrated through their accomplishments and success what it takes to be at the pinnacle of the industry.

Their commitment to quality, excellence and creative design put them in an elite position in the remodeling industry.

They will join the seven other Decade of Excellence winners:

  • Michael Nash Design Build & Homes, Inc., Fairfax, Va.
  • Marrokal Design & Remodeling, San Diego, Calif.
  • Jackson Design & Remodeling, San Diego, Calif.
  • TreHus Builders, Inc., Minneapolis, Minn.
  • Allen Construction, Santa Barbara, Calif.
  • Sockeye Homes, Kent, Wash.
  • Kowalski Construction Inc., Phoenix, Ariz.
