The objective of this kitchen remodel was to brighten up the space with natural light and create a workflow for a young family of four. The goal was to create a plan that combined a dynamic space for entertaining with a functional eat-in, child-friendly kitchen since there was no formal dining room. The project scope also included the addition of a skylight to bring in plenty of natural light to disguise an otherwise deep alcove with minimal windows. It was important to bring in a colorful design aesthetic that aligned with the client’s classic modern style while also including island seating for four and additional pantry storage space.

While most of the spaces in their 1974-built home had been thoughtfully laid out and had an interesting mix of modern and MCM style, the clients’ kitchen lacked any such organization or style. Seeking to remedy this, they asked Knutson Residential Design, LLC, for an open, well-organized, light-filled modern kitchen that tied in with the rest of home.

This small craftsman-style kitchen was converted into a larger, more welcoming space that serves as a hub for this “foodie” family. The new kitchen adds vibrancy to the home with blue and gray cabinetry and gold-tone fixtures. Storage needs are solved through the layout change as well as the inclusion of specific features such as a coffee station and a dog food station. All are welcome into the space as there are large walkways with no floor transitions to accommodate any age or ability. An island with plenty of seating welcomes all guests into the home.

The project inception was focused on the main floor kitchen. The lower floor’s original kitchen was designed as an accessory living space, which included a bedroom, bathroom and living room. Trying to maintain a reasonable timeline and satisfy the creative urge to move forward, design of the entertainment area adjacent the pool began. The result is an aesthetically pleasing, yet small kitchen that provides the homeowners the ability to host parties, as well as hosting family and friends for extended vacations.
