After 20 years of living in a pink house with 1980s era décor, this family decided to update every room in the house as well as the exterior. Updating numerous code violations, including the unsafe fireplace and an awkward staircase, created opportunities for beautiful and creative solutions. The completed remodel gave them a grander entry, a streamlined primary suite, a modern kitchen, a show-stopping two story fireplace, and boosted curb appeal.

The existing house was a well-constructed midcentury modern house located in a Washington, D.C., suburb. The clients approached Block Builders with three major objectives: incorporate age-in-place elements to include a primary suite on the same level as the kitchen and living spaces; provide spaces for the two owners’ hobbies—a chef’s kitchen that had all the storage and technology for baking and a full wood shop for turning bowls; and finally, create comfortable dedicated office spaces.

This home renovation and addition gave the clients the additional space they needed for their growing family while still honoring the scale and style of the neighborhood. They managed to salvage the original home and basement, saving the clients money but still giving them all the items on their wish list, including a larger kitchen and family room, walk-in pantry, wet bar, mudroom, new porches, four additional bedrooms, three new bathrooms, and a large laundry room.

When a newly married couple moved into this home within walking distance of the beach they loved, they needed much more room. They wanted to grow into a home with a modern farmhouse design and an open coastal feel. An extensive whole-home remodel doubled square footage and added a second level. The exterior is now a clean and classic farmhouse design in modern black and white. Inside, statement lighting and patterned walls create individual character for each space. This welcoming retreat by the beach with chic boho details embraces a California beach lifestyle.
