Gutting this 1850 Victorian was a labor of love for before the clients and the designer. The clients wished to have the kitchen reflect the history of the home, while incorporating modern appliances, expanding their working space with a new butler’s pantry, and bringing the dining area into the center of the home. The kitchen’s fireplace still showcased its original hand-made tile and cast-iron hood.
The home had stood vacant for over a decade, which presented some serious challenges to the team. Uneven walls meant they needed to custom create their cabinets, allowing the team’s precision to shine. The central location of the kitchen was relatively small with access to others areas of the home, which created a need to retain mobility throughout and use height over floorspace for storage. To retain authenticity in the home, they hid modern appliances behind cabinet panels. The butler’s pantry created a passage to the rear sitting room and mudroom. Open transoms above the cabinets filter much needed light into the space while a large Boston Pendant and undercabinet lighting supplement the busy workspace. Fine porcelain ware finally found a home with cabinet doors finished in hand-crafted barrel hinges. All the glass cabinet doors and new kitchen windows were designed by replicating the ratio of the historical parlor windows and approved by the local preservation foundation.
