While most of the spaces in their 1974-built home had been thoughtfully laid out and had an interesting mix of modern and MCM style, the client’s kitchen lacked any such organization or style. Seeking to remedy this, they asked the team for a more open, modern, light-filled space that tied in better with the rest of the home and provided more storage/prep space.
The team’s strategy for achieving such a space started with combining the kitchen and informal dining functions. Next they removed two large walls and replaced them with MCM-inspired walnut slat screens. This allowed the kitchen to feel more open and better connected to its adjacent rooms. They then introduced elements that increased the perceived size of the space (tall pantry wall, openings that went to the ceiling, light-colored material palette). To bring in more light, they created a large window unit and then added reflective surfaces (glass tile wall, polished white countertops)to bounce light around the room. Finally, to add more storage and prep they reconfigured the space to allow for a shallow island, full-height pantry wall, mudroom, and dry bar/prep space.
