A classic, 1970s Southwestern-style home suffered from arch doorways and low ceilings as well as a sunken dining area and rooms that were closed in and cut off from one another. The owners wanted to remove the entire middle section of the residence and rebuild it with higher ceilings to produce an open, airy concept. One of their sons uses a wheelchair, which increased the urgency.
To completely renew the space, the company took the middle portion of the house down to its studs and even removed the roof. The firm raised the flooring—so it could be level throughout—and rebuilt the center section to raise the ceiling to a preferred height instead of the original, slanted interior. As a result, the home moved from dated and enclosed to modern and spacious.
