An age-old architectural question is determining a technique to add to a structure eloquently that works with the existing structure. The client commissioned them in 2017 to address contemporary modifications to their home that they desired since they moved to this country a couple of years earlier.

With growing children, the 1920s home (modified in the 1950s) didn’t meet their needs. Insensitive, earlier changes yielded outdated finishes and poor flow to the main bedroom suite. The remaining single bathroom didn’t address the dynamics of a middle school boy and girl siblings. The project lacked an adequate living room that could be used for family or for professional entertaining. The family room was crowded with their dining table, and the entry had a tight, outdated curved stair.

The team added an expansive living room, allowing the dining room to move to a spacious former living room. The family room is now open and connected to the new exterior covered patio. This patio is also connected to the new living rooms. Lastly, the upper floors were all renovated to provide new functional sleeping and bathing areas to all family members.
