Square Footage After: 2,500

The clients wanted to transform their 2500 square foot empty basement into an elegant, multifunctional living and entertaining space. They wanted an airy, open space that could efficiently host many people for parties, lively hangouts, and memorable gatherings. They requested an open floor plan featuring a wet bar, bar seating, TV views from every angle, a pool table, a wine cellar with a tasting area, if possible, a gym, a full bathroom, and ample storage. Fond of wood flooring and unique ceilings, they wanted the space to flow easily from the inside to the outside patio.

The primary challenge was creating a beautiful space with all the client’s wants and needs while working around unmovable bearing walls, poles, and beams. They found a way to cleverly position pillars to hide poles and position the bar to hide bearing walls while creating an interesting ceiling that cleverly masks the HVAC. The renovation company had full reign in making decisions and created a space based on the client’s fondness of an Old World feel with arches echoed throughout the area, including in the brickwork, the built-in alcove that houses a commercial wine-opener, and the steel and glass doors. The overall basement ceiling height was already high enough to accommodate the design and hide the ductwork. At the same time, sound deadening between the two floors was added using green glue noise-proofing sealant and cellulose.
