The clients’ 1922 house had a tight layout that did not function well for their lifestyle. They wanted to maintain the vintage energy of the home while adding essential features such as multiple spaces for entertaining guests, an expanded garage, a larger kitchen, better connectivity throughout the spaces, and a vintage feel.

The project scope included opening the main-level layout; moving the kitchen and dining room to the other side of the house; creating a large entrance to function as a pathway between the dining and family rooms, adding a laundry/mudroom in the back of the home with access to the backyard garden; creating concrete verandas on both sides of the home with access from the dining and family rooms; adding a barrel-styled hallway passage with pantry; fixing the foundation; adding footings; adjusting lower-level clearance height; expanding the garage; and updating mechanicals.

The challenges included crafting a main-level layout that seamlessly combined entertainment spaces while maintaining a logical flow tailored to the homeowners’ lifestyle. The lower level was transformed into a livable area by lowering the foundation level for adequate clearance and ensuring it was up to code. The main level features Forever Barnwood floors and an impressive wood-burning fireplace with a large stone mantlepiece, acting as the centerpiece to anchor the home’s rustic charm. The lower level seamlessly connects to the expanded garage through a convenient mudroom and plays host to a unique guest room that overlooks a beautifully crafted veranda with latticework.
