The owner of a DC rowhouse desired an updated kitchen that would blend its historical charm with modern luxury. The project’s minimalist design program focused on sleek matte black lacquer cabinetry with innovative LED-illuminated bronze channels replacing traditional handles. The hard-working island houses a galley workstation, dishwasher, trash pullouts, and more storage. A custom under-stair wine room was also added.

The team ran into some challenges, including creating a useful entry hall to provide better circulation to the powder room and kitchen, and fitting the island design to the home’s historic character. They decided to include a deep paneled opening between the newly renovated entry and shorten dining room, create a hallway back to the renovated kitchen and powder room, and create ample use of custom cabinetry to maximize storage, functionality, and aesthetics.
