The 100-year-old craftsman home is in an historic neighborhood. The kitchen was old and didn’t function well: a peninsula in the middle of the main part of the kitchen blocked the path from the back door. This forced the homeowners to mostly use an odd, U-shaped corner of the kitchen.

The clients of the project wanted to add an island, create a better work triangle, and incorporate arts-and-crafts elements with a touch of mid-century modern style to the 100-year-old craftsman home. The biggest challenge was properly siting the project, including finding a way to make an unobstructed path through the kitchen to the outside. The team opted to add multiple pantry cabinets, and incorporate upper wall cabinets with clear glass. The adjacent area for eating was transformed into a gorgeous nook with massive windows, and a built-in furniture-style banquette with additional lower storage cabinets added to connect and blend the two areas into what now feels like one big space.
