The homeowners approached the design team for a remodel of their main floor to create an open floor plan and make better use of the available space. They wanted a space that felt clean, modern, and homey all at the same time. The attic space above the kitchen, bathroom, and laundry room was opened up to create a vaulted ceiling, which made the architectural elements in the home more captivating. The laundry room and half bathroom were relocated behind the existing kitchen wall in the unused storage space/hallway in the garage, which required raising the floor to meet the existing kitchen. The existing kitchen’s functionality was to be kept because the homeowners liked the location of appliances and the work triangle.

The challenges included a structural post between the kitchen and eat-in area that could not be removed, so it was concealed to look like a decorative post. The existing load-bearing walls around the stairs were removed to achieve an open concept, and two covered posts and a contemporary handrail with glass inserts were designed to keep a welcoming and unbroken flow from room to room. A custom entertainment center was designed to house a 65″ television and hide the beverage fridge, which comes out of the unit from the top and can swivel 360 degrees, making it viewable from any room on the main level.

Stove: 48″ Wolf Range
