Bainbridge Island, Wash.

Location: Bainbridge Island, Wash. | Project Cost: $98,000
Square footage: 154

The project aimed to make a bathroom accessible and safe for a full-time wheelchair user. The objectives included creating a zero-threshold shower, using durable and low-maintenance materials, providing support for standing, and mitigating light intrusion. The project scope involved removing impediments to access, building walls for grab bars, and installing wet rated lighting fixtures.

The project faced challenges such as providing a comprehensive overview of material and fixture options during a pandemic and understanding how a mechanical wheelchair can alter accessible design-build principles. Solutions included removing the water closet walls, creating his and hers vanities, and strategically locating illuminated controls. The project aimed to create a beautiful and serene environment that would appeal to users of all abilities while enhancing the home’s resale value.
