Project name: The Wave
When the clients approached the building team for a shed dormer addition to their plain beach cottage, the team found inspiration in the backyard. The final product features an S-shaped dormer resembling an open wave, which was constructed to add living space in the form of a second-floor master bedroom suite and reading nook. Building up to add square footage is not an option in this area and the wave-shaped design helped to maximize coastal views while not exceeding the existing roof line. Glass and transparent finishes let light and the ocean movement in. The curved copper roof is an elegant finishing touch. The curve is a reverse radius and part of it had to be fabricated onsite. Additionally, it had to be framed out first and then windows ordered so the manufacturer could customize the porthole and arched windows for the space. The architect conducted calculations to ensure it was structurally sound from wind uplift and the contractor in turn took great care when framing.
