Hayes Architecture/Interiors

Project name: KMM Residence
Project location: Bend, Ore.
Square footage (finished): 4,316 s.f.

This property sits deep within the forest just seven minutes outside the idyllic small town of Bend, Ore. Key design considerations included capturing the amazing mountain and valley views, instilling an authentic warmth through the proportions of the indoor and outdoor spaces, and through materials. Through design and detailing, an attempt was made to emphasize the capable craftsmanship of the building team, which challenged itself to cut as few trees as possible, insert the smallest footprint onto the forest floor, and find creative ways to open up the house to the spectacular views in both the immediate and distant surroundings. The clients wanted to develop a highly effective plan for the family to comfortably gather and sleep.

The floor plan was developed around trees to avoid disturbing them, and to include them as part of the view. Low-maintenance materials such as copper roofing, elastomeric plaster, highly durable woods, double-glazed windows and doors, radiant-heated stone flooring and low-voltage lighting were specified. A physically separate round stone building beside the main house opposite the front door serves as the client’s office. Below that space, connected to the living room space is the “Kiva” round family TV room that doubles as a guest room. The connector from living to TV/guest room is a homework center.
