Department Store Now Offering Limited Remodel Services

by Kacey Larsen

J.C. Penney is taking a chance on home remodel services by starting to offer services like bathroom remodeling and blinds installation. Services will also include selling and installing awnings, water systems and smart home technology. Originally tested during a 100-store test—in cities like San Diego, San Antonio and Tampa—the “JCPenney Home Services” rubric is likely rolling out to hundreds more stores this spring.

Each group of services will have displays and signage inside stores’ home goods departments as well as a website that provides information, handles requests for a consultation and can set up home visits with authorized contractors. As with its recent return to appliance sales, J.C. Penney will not take actual possession of goods but instead teams up with other suppliers—for example, the store works with Trane and Samsung by essentially renting out its space to suppliers and service providers.

Additionally, J.C. Penney will introduce a JCPenney Home Services credit card that will offer higher credit limits than its standard store cards. J.C. Penney CEO Marvin Ellison, explains this new direction is a response to consumer spending shifting to home improvement and away from apparel and other purchases.
