Designer’s Notebook: Modern Family

Carriage House Custom Homes & Interiors overhauls a traditional 1990s kitchen to accommodate a more active lifestyle.

by Kyle Clapham

Located in the heart of Middle Tennessee, just outside Nashville, this home was built in 2005 and designed in the traditional style of the original residents. The house featured the atypical design elements and styles used in the 1990s and early 2000s.

The kitchen had traditional wood cabinetry, black granite countertops, oak wood floors and brown wallpaper. Fast forward to 2020, and the style and color tones of the kitchen were not aligned with the style of the new homeowners.

Carriage House Custom Homes & Interiors of Franklin, Tennessee, took on the task of designing and remodeling this traditional kitchen and transforming it into a modern monochromatic dream. To accomplish the sleek, modern style that this home needed, several design elements were introduced into the design of the space.

The company worked closely with the homeowners to ensure that every selection was top-of-the-line material that would satisfy all their desires. This includes two-tone cabinetry, full-weight quartz backsplashes, waterfall countertops, a custom handcrafted hood and built-in luxury appliances from Sub-Zero and Wolf.

The homeowners also had a desire for an open floor plan with more space in the kitchen. By removing the wall between the kitchen and family room, the new floor plan transitions smoothly between each room. The solution for adding more storage to the kitchen was enclosing a staircase next to the kitchen that was not being utilized.

By removing this staircase, the company was able to add more cabinetry as well as create more space for their pantry and laundry room. The cabinetry was customized to create tall upper cabinets for storage and large drawers that produce clean lines for a modern aesthetic.

The functionality of the space was enhanced by creating four independent work zones. The island houses a Native Trails undermount farm sink, dishwasher and Wolf microwave drawer. Directly across from it are Wolf double wall ovens, a Wolf gas cooktop and a Delta Brizo pot filler with a custom-built hood housing the ventilation system.

Both areas feature Caesarstone Attica quartz countertops with full-height backsplash and waterfall end on the island. Great detail was taken at the cook area to align the heavy-duty drawers under and around the cooktop. Across from the end of the island is the Sub-Zero refrigerator, a prep sink, second dishwasher and floating shelves above.

The cabinetry that was selected is Dura Supreme Crestwood Series in two different door styles. Dura Supreme Cabinetry’s Crestwood cabinetry is traditional American “framed construction” cabinetry, custom-crafted with premium joinery and materials and a panoramic palette of door styles and finishes.

Dura Supreme was chosen for its unique combination of outstanding value and leading-edge design. In search of quality, value and craftsmanship, professional kitchen designers from coast to coast look for cabinetry that fulfills their customers’ desire for personalized design choices and outstanding quality.

The Chroma slab drawer style in a bright white paint serves as the primary door style, and the Hudson door is used with glass inserts at the fourth work area: the beverage area. The inside of those cabinets was stylized using both the white primary color and black on the back for a striking effect.

That area also features a Caesarstone Attica 5143 quartz countertop. The kitchen countertop is known as the heart of the home. Life flows by, the family grows and changes, but a kitchen countertop should remain timeless. The surface sets the mood and pace for the entire household. The waterfall end-treatment and full-height matching backsplash throughout the kitchen made a distinct effort in following the modern design theme.

The end result of this project was a spacious, bright contemporary kitchen with an ideal traffic flow to match the open floor plan. The specific work zones throughout the kitchen and every design element that was introduced brought this successful remodel together.

Overall, the homeowners loved the improved functionality for their active lifestyle and were thrilled to say goodbye to the 1990s traditional design and hello to a kitchen that matched their flair for contemporary style. QR
