Functional basement space

This remodel took a 902-sq.-ft. unfinished basement to a 940-sq.-ft. living space, complete with a family room, bath, laundry room, artist’s studio/guest bedroom and a new stair to replace the 29-in.-wide original staircase. The existing plumbing stack was used to create artful layers and jogs in the wall for a whimsical effect and dropped steel beam concealed plumbing runs. Strand-woven bamboo flooring runs through part of the space.
