K&BDN Parent Acquired by Media Firm

Melville, NY Cygnus Business Media, the parent company of
Kitchen & Bath Design News and its four sister magazines, has
been acquired by CommerceConnect Media, a Westport, CT-based media
and communications company, corporate officials announced.

The acquisition, announced in late June, will enable Cygnus one
of the country’s leading business-to-business media companies to
“serve as the foundation for a diversified marketing communications
company,” commented CommerceConnect Media CEO Paul Mackler,
formerly president of Reed Exhibition Companies, a $225-million
division of Reed Elsevier.

Cygnus, based here and in Fort Atkinson, WI, publishes 48 trade
magazines in eight major markets, including residential remodeling,
cabinet manufacturing and fabrication. Other markets include
imaging, public safety, transportation, construction equipment,
agriculture, food and retailing.

Among the company’s trade magazines are K&BDN and four
related titles SolidSurface, Wood Digest, Qualified Remodeler and
Laminating Design & Technology. The company also publishes 17
custom publications managed by its Fort Atkinson, WI-based Custom
Marketing division, and produces 17 trade shows within Cygnus’
Burnsville, MN-based Exposition division.

“Cygnus Business Media is a solid foundation which
CommerceConnect Media will use in order to strategically grow and
expand its lead in the business-to-business communications
marketplace,” Mackler said.

“We plan to offer a diverse variety of print, live and
interactive media products and services to the business executives,
marketers and professionals in each market we serve.”

Gerry Hogan, a former cable-television executive, purchased
Cygnus Business Media formerly known as PTN Publishing Co. in 1997,
along with partners Blair Schmidt-Fellner and investors Kelso &
Company.

CommerceConnect Media is a year-old partnership between Mackler
and ABRY Partners LLC, a Boston-based private equity investment
firm that invests solely in media and communications companies.

Prior to his experience with Reed Exhibition Companies, Mackler
was a principal and CEO of CMC, a trade show, conference and
publishing company.

“Kitchen & Bath Design News, I’m extremely confident, is in
very good hands under its new ownership,” said K&BDN publisher
Eliot Sefrin. “CommerceConnect Media shares our vision for the
future and will continue to support us in our growth.

“We look forward to working closely with Paul Mackler in
delivering to the kitchen and bath industry a first-class magazine
and a variety of related non-print
