A new ownership group wanted to overhaul the existing facility but keep a Minnesota theme to ensure a memorable experience, so the remodeler combined repurposed wood with new wood, bare concrete, exposed ductwork and custom metal designs. To create a raised and more intimate dining area, the design team utilized native river valley rock—which was custom cut in Bagley, Minnesota—for the big, rustic hearth.

A far cry from its Caribbean-pink past, the new exterior now features its own modern take on a rustic facade. The company transformed the pastel structure using the tones of terra cotta, iron ore and copper, replacing aging white elements with sleek black ones. The exterior wainscotting consists of the same native rock used indoors, and a new deck and pergola addition were included as well.

Project location: Washington, D.C.
Square footage: 2,825
Project cost: $510,000

GTM Architects recently designed the second location for District Dogs—a full-service pet care company in Washington, D.C.’s Navy Yard neighborhood. The 2,825 square-foot space features doggie daycare, overnight boarding, a dog spa, training and a curated retail shop for dogs and dog lovers alike.

The main goal for this project was to convert a utilitarian area and make it both aesthetically appealing and functional. When selecting design elements and finishes, the team concentrated on ease of maintenance as well as what worked best for dogs of all sizes. The firm created the interiors and incorporated new partitions, doors, finishes and modifications to existing HVAC, electrical and plumbing systems.

Make Mine Home worked to turn a 1960s car dealership that has sat empty for more than 12 years into a satellite office for Athens Physical Therapy and Prescription Gym. The goal was to create two open and airy gyms: one for physical therapy and the other for members/former patients, as well as provide five exam rooms, reception area, new ADA and updated bathrooms, laundry room and offices and a dedicated area for athletes to train on AstroTurf.

The interior required a total electrical rewire to meet medical code, total HVAC replacement, update and extension of plumbing and sewer for the new and renovated bathroom, in addition to replacing the structural steel posts to carry the weight of the existing L-beams and updating the sewer system, insulation and lighting systems.
