Light creates open, airy kitchen

A young family wanted to give its home a modern aesthetic with a new kitchen and eating area, which was part of a larger renovation of the house. A state-of-the-art kitchen was created by taking over the space of an old laundry area, a closet and bathroom. By enhancing the support structure throughout the home, unattractive posts in the kitchen could be removed, opening up the area. The project included design, demolition of the old kitchen, updating all systems, and the selection and installation of new fixtures, flooring, lighting, cabinetry and appliances. Challenges included several small, dark disconnected spaces, varying ceiling heights, unattractive support posts, track lighting and poor work flow in the existing kitchen. Solutions included the play of light in the reconfigured space which makes this contemporary kitchen feel bright and airy. Talking space from the original laundry area expanded the footprint while enhancing the support structure allowed the posts to be removed, completely opening up the kitchen. The tray ceiling treatment and suspended soffits house recessed lighting. Task lighting complements the abundant natural light from enlarged windows over the sink and in the eating area. A frosted glass divider separates the eating area from the foyer leading to the indoor pool. The faceted ceiling incorporates soaring angles, skylights and modern fixtures, further illuminating the space.
