WASHINGTON—The Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist (CAPS) program, created by the National Association of Home Builders’ (NAHB) in collaboration with Home Innovation Research Labs, NAHB 50+ Housing Council and AARP in 2002, reached its 5,000th graduate. The program teaches the technical, business management and customer service skills essential for serving the fastest-growing segment of the residential remodeling industry.

Jeffrey Tucker, president of Tucker Building & Design LLC in Wadsworth, Ohio, became the 5,000th graduate of CAPS. Tucker chose to earn his CAPS designation upon realizing that much of his clientele are 55 or older. “I want to be able to provide the best solutions for my customers so that they can age-in-place comfortably and also show them that these home modifications can be stylish while at the same time making their homes low-maintenance,” he said.

Earning the CAPS designation means completing three classes: Marketing and Communications Strategies for Aging and Accessibility (CAPS I), Design/Build Solutions for Aging and Accessibility (CAPS II) and Business Management for Building Professionals. The three classes cover marketing and customer service tools, technical knowledge to do the home modifications and how to run a successful business within the aging-in-place market.
