Hackensack, NJ Four major industry corporations have signed on as co-sponsors for the series of all-day business management seminars that will bring Kitchen & Bath Design News “live” to major U.S. markets under the terms of an exclusive alliance with the Nat-ional Kitchen & Bath Association.
A pair of “Managing For Profit” seminars aimed specifically at kitchen and bath dealers, designers and remodelers has been scheduled for the Boston and San Francisco markets this month and in October. Both programs are being produced by K&BDN and the NKBA under the co-sponsorship of Kohler Co., Plain & Fancy Custom Cabinetry, DACOR and DeWils Industries, Inc., said K&BDN publisher Eliot Sefrin.
The Boston-area session is set for Sept. 28 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, in Natick, MA, with Kohler and Plain & Fancy as co-sponsors. The San Francisco session will take place at the Holiday Inn Civic Center, with DACOR and DeWils as co-sponsors.
“These companies are to be applauded as industry leaders who are interested in strengthening their own customer base and the industry at large by providing kitchen and bath specialists with practical, in-depth, profit-generating strategies for managing their business in a rapidly-changing industry,” Sefrin observed.
Kitchen & Bath Design News announced the “Managing For Profit” program in mid-’99, with this year’s sessions kicking off what will be an annual series of quarterly seminars in key markets. Seminars, with dates and locations to be announced, are being planned for four cities in 2000. Likely targets are Chicago and Atlanta, as well as sites in the Northeast and West, Sefrin said.
Each “Managing For Profit” seminar is a fast-moving, day-long, interactive event that will focus on key areas of financial management, from business plans and budgets through cash-flow analysis and industry performance benchmarks. Also covered will be buying and selling strategies, including negotiating effectively with vendors and how to protect selling margins, as well as human resources management, including hiring, training, compensating and motivating employees.
Instructors for the programs are Stephen Vlachos, CKD, CBD, and Hank Darlington.
Vlachos is g.m. of the Portland, ME-based Atlantic Kitchen Center, a design/remodeling firm that operates as a division of Hancock Lumber. He was an architect of the NKBA’s “Business Manage-ment Symposiums,” as well as an instructor for the association, and has spoken widely on business-management-related subjects. He was also among the authors of the NKBA’s “Performance Analysis Reports (PAR Studies).”
Darlington has more than 40 years of experience as a business owner, professional manager, author, writer, speaker and teacher. The former owner of the Sacramento, CA-based The Plumbery, he helped create the NKBA’s “Complete Business Management Seminar” and its “Business Owner’s Symposium.” A recipient of numerous national awards for his outstanding business management background, Darlington is now one of the kitchen and bath industry’s leading consultants and writes a column on personnel management for K&BDN.
Both seminars to take place from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on their respective dates cost $175, including lunch. NKBA members can attend for a discounted fee of $100. Attendees are eligible for OPD and CEU credits toward their CKD and CBD certification, or as interior designers meeting state licensing laws.
