Remodelers’ Community Service: Chris Zizza

by Kacey Larsen

C&R Flooring President Chris Zizza has several accepted several awards for his company’s philanthropic efforts in addition to his own community service, but the accolades are not the incentive. “There’s nothing more important or rewarding than giving back to community,” Zizza says.

Recently, Zizza was the recipient of the National Wood Flooring Association's Community Service Award for his work for Marian High School in Framingham, Mass. Significant budget cuts after the school became its own entity in 2004 through a change in the governance with the Archdiocese of Boston necessitated the school reaching out to parents and community members for a fundraising effort. The school’s administration wanted to replace aging and unsafe school buses by raising $10,000 for a one-year lease and $50,000 for a five-year lease. Despite the community’s generosity, the fundraising efforts only succeeded in raising $12,500. Zizza stepped up and assumed the responsibility for the five-year lease.

“Both of my daughters attend Marian High School,” says Zizza. “It is rewarding to me that I can give back to a school that has given my family so much.”

In addition, C&R Flooring, in Westwood, Mass., has refinished the school’s gym flooring for the past 13 years. New floors are supplied and installed for Marian High School’s hallways, theater room and weight room as needed. The company has also provided materials, labor and expertise to the Room to Dream Foundation in addition to church and community-based renovations like Emanuel House in Boston. C&R donated all the labor for a house renovation in Medfield, Mass., featured on Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. Altogether, 3,700 sq. ft. of flooring was installed in seven hours.

C&R Flooring was the recipient of a 2013 Silver PRISM Award for Community Spirit from the Builders and Remodelers Association of Greater Boston. Zizza, personally, has also been awarded the Ellis Island Medal of Honor from the National Ethnic Coalition of Organizations.
