Showroom for Builders Offers One-Stop

Savage, MD One-stop shopping is the goal of the newly remodeled
Design House Kitchens showroom, which is based on a philosophy of
partnerships, product selection and and price with something for
everyone being key. Formerly D&H Distributing, the newly named
Design House Kitchens celebrated its grand opening here in
November. It boasts a 6,000 sq.-ft. showroom featuring some 20
kitchen and bath vignettes, and a wide array of products in a
diversity of price ranges.

The showroom is open to the trade only, with the primary
clientele being builders, remodelers, interior designers and
architects. Indeed, building partnerships with local industry
professionals was one of the key reasons for the remodel, according
to president Harry Spector, who notes that,”We remodeled our
showroom to enhance our relationships with area builders,
remodelers, architects and interior designers.”

Spector explains that he “recognizes the new home building
market will show down eventually and the homeowner who can’t afford
to move will want to enhance what they have, utilizing local
remodelers and interior designers. And, he adds, “Since most
remodeling professionals don’t have showrooms of their own,” his
showroom will give those professionals “a place to bring their
clients when it comes time to choose kitchen cabinets, countertops
and appliances.”

A wide variety of products create a one-stop shopping
experience, with the showroom carrying such lines as Timberlake,
Diamond, Bertch, Wood-Mode/Brookhaven and Legacy cabinets; Formica,
Nevamar, DuPont Corian and Hi-Macs countertops, and Blanco sinks
and faucets.

The displays are key to the showroom’s success, since Design
House has to not only satisfy industry professionals’ needs, but
the needs of their clients, as well. Spector explains, “Most people
have a difficult time trying to visualize what their kitchen or
bath is going to look like using the tiny samples shown in most
builder selection trailers. We utilize professionally decorated and
accessorized at-home-style kitchen and bath vignettes.”

Offering products in a diversity of price ranges is also a key
part of Spector’s business philosophy. He explains that, “The
showroom was designed with everyone’s purse in mind. We offer
stock-line, semi-custom and full-custom cabinets. We show five
stock-line kitchen vignettes in various door styles and species all
in the same area of the showroom. Moving to the middle section of
the showroom, we show many of our semi-custom lines, and in the
front of the showroom, our full-custom lines are displayed.”

He cites the live gourmet kitchen as the most popular

“We used a semi-custom cabinet, applied a dark glaze, added many
custom features such as multi-level crown moldings, and selected
custom hardware and many interior accessories. We use this kitchen
for cooking demonstrations.” Indeed, appliances, too, are key to
the showroom’s appeal, and Spector notes that the showroom has
formed alliances with Whirlpool, KitchenAid, Amana, Frigidaire,
Maytag, Jenn-Air, Bosch, Thermador and Gaggenau. He explains that,
“The main display area features a working gourmet kitchen with five
ovens, two professional style ranges, a 48″ professional style
cooktop, two dishwashers, a vegetable steamer, a deep fryer and a
professional wok.” If this seems like a lot, well, Spector believes
that investing in the showroom is the best way to bring in area
professionals. He notes, “This area alone costs over $100,000,” yet
he believes it’s a wise investment, since it is used “on a daily
basis by local professional chefs for product demonstrations.”

Lighting, too, plays an integral role in the showroom’s visual
appeal. “The showroom utilizes fluorescent and indoor floodlights
to maintain a home- like atmosphere,” he says, adding that interior
cabinet lighting is also used in many of the displays.

As for the future, he notes that “cooking demonstrations and
educational seminars are in the works.”
