Welcome to Qualified Remodeler

by bkrigbaum@solagroup.com

Welcomed is how I’ve felt since joining the staff of Qualified Remodeler last month. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed settling into my new role.

Although I am new to the remodeling industry, I am not new to construction. I’ve spent the last decade reporting, writing and editing for construction trade publications, including national and regional roofing magazines and a commercial-building retrofit magazine. The majority of my career, however, was spent as editor of a nationally circulated environmental-design magazine and Web site, during which I learned a building is a system; if one thing is out of whack, other parts of the building will suffer. I have embraced building science and real nuts-and-bolts-type educational articles, and I intend to bring the same types of learning tools to you.

My experience in construction has taught me there is always more to learn. I’ve discovered a lot about the remodeling industry these past few weeks, thanks to those of you whom I’ve already met. My second week with the magazine, I was greeted by exhibitors and QR readers during the largest trade show of the year for our industry, the Remodeling Show, in Baltimore. It was wonderful to have an event, like QR’s Top 500 and Master Design Awards Ceremony, which allowed me to speak to many of you, learn about the industry and hear your ideas for the magazine. (See photos from the event.) The following week, I attended the National Association of Home Builders’ Fall Board Meetings in New York, where I was warmly greeted by the NAHB Remodelers Council and, again, had the opportunity to discuss ideas and learn from the remodelers who read QR. These first few weeks have been a whirlwind of places and faces, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. It has been extremely gratifying to hear all the positive feedback about QR and know that I have joined a magazine with a solid 35-year history and passionate readership.

Your passion for the magazine stems from quality editorial, such as the column in this issue by David Lupberger. He points out the opportunity in foreclosed properties for remodeling contractors. Buying these properties at reduced prices and renovating them is a win for the remodeler, bank and community. Read more in “Sales & Marketing”.

In addition, spray polyurethane foam, or SPF, continues to gain market share in the residential insulation arena. Because not everyone is familiar with SPF, there are some misconceptions circulating within the industry. Get educated about SPF with “Product Trends,” by Harry Spaulding.

I look forward to continuing to learn about and publish the stories that are important to you—the stories that will help you succeed in your business and offer you insights to excel in a tough economy. To do this, I need your input. Please call me. E-mail me. Introduce yourself at the next event. I’d like you to feel as welcome to share ideas with me as you’ve made me feel these past few weeks. After all, you—the readers—will make me successful in my new role. Therefore, I’d like to welcome you to Qualified Remodeler.

I look forward to working with you!
